Critics Consensus

Melancholia's dramatic tricks are more obvious than they should be, but this is otherwise a showcase for Kirsten Dunst's acting and for Lars von Trier's profound, visceral vision of depression and destruction.

Christine L Full disclaimer: I only got about 57 min through it, at which point I gave up.Would have loved to love it, but it is tedious. It drags on and on and on and on. The little development that happened in the part I saw was not particularly captivating. The movement of the camera gave me such motion sickness that I had to keep closing my eyes not to feel sick, which is partly why I eventually gave up. Fine, it's for effect and I assume that its aim is to portray instability, but it could have been used with more discretion.I'm not sure if it becomes clear as the film continues why two sisters would have completely different accents. The scenery however is quite beautiful.Maybe it was a film for a bygone era and has lost some of its relevance. Don't care about the characters or the issues. Our lead says "Earth is evil" it sums up the movie's perspective. Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/24 Full Review David W One of the worst movies that I've ever seen. I found myself wanting it to all end as much as her. Rated 1/5 Stars • Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/15/24 Full Review Blobbo X Blobbo can relate to depiction of depression. Well written, acted, shot. Genius music tie-in. Ending not happy, but no planets were harmed in making of picture. Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/30/24 Full Review julie b With the soft glow lighting and orchestral score, this is a beautiful and also incredibly depressing movie, but it is not without joy and humor; the limo backseat and Hennessy chugging scenes are precious, and the first 20 mins were so funny I was laughing out loud. The narrow, contained focus works so well and all of the emotionally charged performances are great. Also I love the way it’s shot - the camera movement kind of reminds me of succession. Also also, is this the most normal character Alexander Skarsgard has ever played?“Melancholia will pass us all by” “Two million and six beans!!!” Rated 4.5/5 Stars • Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews
